Annual Report 2024 of Exploration of BioMat-X
Exploration of BioMat-X (EBMX, eISSN: 2996-9476), a peer-reviewed open access online journal launched in February 2024, is dedicated to publishing papers of the high quality and significance in all areas related to biomaterials, aiming to inject new vitality into the engineering innovations, thereby promoting the development of next-generation medical devices and the establishment of clinical application standards.
This report provides an overview of the journal’s key achievements in 2024, highlighting significant milestones in submissions, publications, citations, editorial developments, and global outreach. It also outlines strategic initiatives and future directions, reinforcing the journal’s commitment to excellence and its mission to drive innovation in biomaterials research.
Key Achievements in 2024
Submission and Publication
Submission
In 2024, EBMX received 47 submissions, an 80% increase from 26 in 2023 [Figure 1]. This growth reflects a rapid enhancement in the journal's influence and appeal. Submissions included 29 Original Articles (62%), 15 Reviews (32%), 1 Mini Review (2%), 1 Systematic Review (2%), and 1 Editorial (2%). Original Articles and Reviews accounted for the largest proportion [Figure 2], reflecting the journal's efforts in promoting fundamental research and the publication of original findings, and demonstrating that it has started to attract experts in the biomaterials field for in-depth academic exchanges and theoretical discussions.

Publication
In 2024, the journal published a total of 25 articles, marking its first year of publication. The publication volume remained stable, with a diverse range of article types: Original Article: 13 (52%), Review: 8 (32%), Editorial: 2 (8%), Commentary: 1 (4%), and Case Report: 1 (4%). Original Articles accounted for the highest proportion [Figure 3]. This indicates that EBMX is attracting a substantial number of high-quality academic contributions, establishing itself as an platform for advancing original research.

Authors
The average H-index of corresponding authors is 20, and that of first authors is 9.04. The 25 corresponding authors came from 13 different countries, including Canada, USA, India, Italy, etc [Figure 4]. We are honored to have attracted distinguished scholars from around the world to contribute to EBMX. This diverse authorship distribution reflects the journal’s global appeal and increasing internationalization, demonstrating that our research topics have gained broad international recognition. Moving forward, the journal will continue to bridge cultures and regions, bringing together the latest scientific advancements worldwide. We aim to provide our global readership with diverse academic perspectives and cutting-edge knowledge.
Article Data Highlights
The 25 published articles had an average of 1,839.6 views and 93.12 downloads. Among them, 10 articles exceeded 1,000 views and 100 downloads, indicating a high level of reader interest and engagement [Table 1]. These metrics clearly demonstrate that EBMX’s academic content is attracting significant attention, increasing its visibility and impact among international readers. With the support of the open-access model, the journal provides easier access for a global audience, further enhancing its role in international academic exchange.

EBMX accumulated 25 citations in 2024, with mean citation 1. This achievement is highly significant for the first year of publication, demonstrating that its academic content has begun to attract attention within academia. This milestone clearly proves that the high-quality articles published by the journal have gained initial recognition from peers, further reinforcing EBMX’s commitment to maintaining high publishing standards and academic excellence.
Highly Cited Paper Award 2024
To inspire groundbreaking research and recognize high-quality contributions, we set up the "Highly Cited Paper Award" policy from the very beginning. Over the past year, the article by Prof. Ajay Vikram Singh’s team has accumulated 18 citations, won the Highly Cited Paper Award 2024.

Rejection Rate
The rejection rate has decreased from 68.75% last year to 44%. This change indicates that EBMX is now attracting more manuscripts that align with its focus and quality standards. It also reflects that the journal’s peer review process and editorial standards are gradually gaining recognition from authors and the academic community. As a result, the journal is drawing in more high-quality submissions and offering authors more positive feedback and opportunities for academic exchange.
Reviewers
In 2024, EBMX had 53 reviewers involved in peer review, with an average H-index of 14.13. The average number of valid reviewer comments per manuscript is 2.8. The reviewers came from 29 different countries, which highlights the broad recognition of the journal’s reviewer pool within the academic community [Figure 5]. This underscores the internationalization and disciplinary diversity of the reviewer base, ensuring that the journal can efficiently and accurately assess manuscripts, driving the publication of high-quality research.

Editorial Board
In 2024, EBMX welcomed 3 new members to the editorial board, bringing the total number of board members to 71 (the average H-index of 50.47), including 1 Editor-in-Chief, 18 Associate Editors, and 52 Editorial Board Members from 27 different countries, such as Canada, Italy, France, China, UK, USA, etc [Figure 6]. The average H-index of the editorial board members is 50.47. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board for their invaluable contributions, including leading special issues, submitting papers, and handling manuscripts, etc. It is through their selfless support and hard work that EBMX has been able to continue its development within the global academic community, publishing high-level research. We look forward to continuing to collaborate closely with the editorial board in the future to push EBMX toward an even broader academic platform.

In the future, the journal will continue to focus on expanding the international scope of the editorial board, further broadening its national distribution and disciplinary coverage to ensure that it can more comprehensively reflect global scientific trends and diverse academic perspectives, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Special Issues
EBMX has 12 ongoing special issues, covering a wide range of emerging hot topics in biomaterials. These include the medical applications of lignin hydrogels, regenerative medicine, biosensors, 3D printing of biometals, wearable medical devices, and explore natural biomaterials, magnetic materials, cardiovascular biomaterials, green nanoparticles, and biomaterials for dentistry and oral surgery in the medical field.

Social Media & Promotion
As of December 31, 2024, EBMX has continued to expand its influence on LinkedIn, accumulating 2,938 connections and 1,692 followers. As social media becomes an essential channel for academic dissemination, this growth trend not only enhances the journal’s international visibility but also provides a broader audience and interactive platform for its research content and academic updates.
In 2024, EBMX also significantly enhanced its visibility by collaborating with academic conference. Our Guest Editor Prof. Rupinder Singh, as the Organizing Co-Chair of "the 8th National Conference on Advances in Manufacturing Technology", introduced EBMX journal to attendees. This conference collaboration not only provided a platform for journals to present the research results and academic value, but also attracted more potential authors and readers for journals.

Goals and Expectation
In 2025, EBMX will remain committed to maintaining stable, high-quality publications and expanding its academic impact. We will continue to uphold our current policies, including open access, Highly Cited Paper Award, and waiving APC before Jan 31, 2029. These initiatives aim to encourage more high-quality submissions and provide a broader academic exchange platform for scholars worldwide.
To further enhance the journal’s academic impact, EBMX will continue to expand the country distribution and disciplinary coverage of editorial board, striving to incorporate more international and diverse academic perspectives. Additionally, we will launch special issues on trending topics to encourage broad discussions and research innovations within the academic community. In the second half of the year, we plan to apply for Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) to further strengthen the journal’s international recognition. We will also explore more opportunities for conference collaborations, expanding partnerships with academic conferences and institutions to increase the journal’s global visibility.
We sincerely welcome more collaborators to join EBMX in driving the high-quality development of the journal. Whether as an editorial board member, reviewer, or author, your participation will bring new energy to the journal and enhance the depth and breadth of academic exchange.
