The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) is a complex genetic system that encodes proteins which predominantly regulate immune/ inflammatory processes an wide range of scientific literature have been produced regarding HLA involvement in autoimmune disease. However interest is emerging on the role played by HLA in neurodevelopment and neuroplasticity, especially through microglia regulation and synaptic pruning.
The HLA system is expected to influence both the early development and the course of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders.
This issue will be focused in deepening the role that the HLA system can play in the etiology of several neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.
The studies may range over the entire life span from psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to neurocognitive disorders ageing related as Parkinson's disease Alzheimer, Frontotemporal dementia etc until neurodegenerative disease covid-19 related.
