Annual Report 2024 for Exploration of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases

Formally launched in April 2024, Exploration of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (EEMD) is an open-access journal dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research in endocrine and metabolic diseases. As a member of the Open Exploration family, EEMD advocates for rigorous peer review while promoting global academic collaboration. In its inaugural year, the journal established a robust foundation for growth, prioritizing quality, inclusivity, and academic excellence. This report highlights the achievements of EEMD in 2024 and outlines the strategic goals for 2025.

Key Achievements in 2024

Submissions and Publications

Submission Volume and Types

EEMD received 43 submissions from 24 countries in 2024, reflecting growing interest despite the journal being in its nascent stage. This represents a remarkable 207% increase from the 14 submissions received during the 2023 preparatory phase. Original articles accounted for 18 submissions (41.9%), with review articles totaling 12 (27.9%). This indicates the journal’s early success in attracting innovative research findings and comprehensive academic perspectives, supporting the updating and integration of knowledge in the field of endocrine and metabolic diseases.

Total Publications

Throughout the year, 20 articles were successfully published, reflecting a steady progression in content production for the journal’s initial phase. The publication mix included 5 original articles (25%) and 6 review articles (30%), demonstrating a balance between presenting new findings and summarizing existing research. Case reports and commentaries accounted for 6 publications (30%), offering a diverse range of content to meet academic needs.

The 20 published articles feature corresponding authors from 9 different countries and regions. To enrich content diversity and promote global inclusivity, the journal will make more efforts to engage with researchers from different countries and regions in the future.

Average Impact of Authors

In the published articles, the average H-index of corresponding authors is 36.1, and that of first authors is 20.1, indicating the profound research backgrounds and influence of the authors in their respective fields. EEMD will make great efforts to attract more high-quality manuscripts and keep inviting excellent authors to further enhance the quality and influence of its publications.

Journal Article Data

The published articles achieved an average of 1,389.3 views per article, 44.5 downloads, and 11 cumulative citations. These data show that although the journal is in its infancy, it has received increasing attention from the academic community. Some articles have received a good response on social media, further enhancing the journal's popularity. Moving forward, we plan to build on this success by targeting popular topics and promoting high-potential content.

Manuscript Processing

Manuscript Processing Time

The average initial review time was 11 days, with a submission-to-acceptance time of approximately 90 days. These figures indicate EEMD’s efficiency and rigor in manuscript processing. We aim to improve efficiency and provide a better submission experience for authors, accelerating the dissemination of academic research.

Reviewers

In 2024, 44 reviewers from 14 different countries participated in the review process. Each article received an average of 3.1 substantive peer reviews. This diverse group of reviewers ensures a wide range of perspectives and expertise, crucial for the quality and validity of published research. It also underscores the journal’s international reach and recognition, contributing to its ability to publish high-quality, globally-relevant research.

Editorial Board

New Editorial Board Members in 2024

In 2024, EEMD expanded its editorial leadership with six new board members representing four nations: the United States, China, the Republic of Korea, and Turkey. Among them, Prof. Gulali Aktas played an important role by establishing a special issue titled "Current Views on Pathogenesis, Diagnosis and Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Its Complications and Related Conditions" and submitting manuscripts, which further enhanced the journal's reputation.

Current Editorial Board

The EEMD journal editorial board team consists of 41 members, including 8 Associate Editors and 33 Editorial Board Members, from 19 countries such as the United States, Germany, and Italy, with an average H-index of 53.3. The editorial board of EEMD is highly qualified, authoritative, and professional. In 2024, 36.6% of members contributed through manuscript submission, special issue organization, or reviewing. This active engagement is crucial for the journal's operation and growth.

Special Issues

In 2024, EEMD had 8 special issues open for submission, covering a variety of topics including the HPA axis, glucose/lipid/energy regulators, aging hormonal regulation, digitalization's effect on diabetes, menopause metabolic syndrome, oxidative stress & diabetes, cytokine signaling in metabolic disease, and type 2 diabetes views. These special issues were led by guest editors from around the world, who have an average H-index of 32, ensuring high-quality content and diverse perspectives.

Currently, 4 articles have been published under the special issue titled "The HPA Axis in Health and Disease", with an average of 1,650 views. Among all the published special issue articles, "Testosterone undecanoate is associated with improved ageing male symptoms score in men with type 2 diabetes and adult-onset testosterone deficiency: re-analyzed results from a randomised controlled trial" and "Waist-to-height ratio as a novel marker of metabolic syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus" are relatively popular, having received two citations each.

Database indexing

EEMD is currently indexed in several databases, including Google Scholar, Dimensions, MyScienceWork, and Portico, which help extend our reach across diverse academic communities. Looking ahead, we are determined to further elevate EEMD’s profile by applying for inclusion in prestigious databases such as DOAJ and Scopus.

Social Media & Promotion

EEMD's LinkedIn presence expanded by 682 followers in 2024, driven by regular updates on publications, special issues, and journal milestones, which resonated strongly within the academic community. The growth in followers and shares has enhanced article visibility and the journal’s reputation, contributing to increased views, downloads, and citations.

In 2024, Prof. Karel Pacak, Editor-in-Chief of EEMD journal, actively promoted the journal through participation in multiple international conferences, including the 15th PUMCH Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Forum (PCEMF 2024) in Beijing, China. The forum attracted over 300 experts and 1,550 delegates, serving as a key platform to showcase EEMD’s mission. Prof. Pacak forged collaborations with global leaders in endocrinology during these engagements, advancing the journal’s scientific impact. Following the conference, Prof. Anli Tong (Peking Union Medical College Hospital) joined EEMD’s Editorial Board, strengthening its academic authority.

Conclusion

In its inaugural year of 2024, Exploration of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (EEMD) emerged as a key platform for endocrine and metabolic research. The journal experienced rapid growth, with a 207% increase in submissions from 24 countries, showcasing its global influence. A high-caliber editorial board (average H-index: 53.3) ensured strict peer review, maintaining top-tier academic standards. Eight specialized issues highlighted cutting-edge innovations, such as AI in diabetes care and digital health.

Social media growth and conference participation boosted EEMD's visibility, attracting contributions from prominent authors. Early indicators, like an average of 1,389 article views and 11 citations, signal rising academic recognition.

In 2025, EEMD aims to expand its global footprint by seeking DOAJ indexing, targeting an average citation of 1.5, and joining 2-3 international conferences. Focusing on avant-garde topics and enhancing author engagement will solidify its role in sharing impactful research.

The first year of EEMD has laid a solid foundation for future growth.
